I brought on Jason Weaver to help me redevelop Tufts Roundtable – a niche social news aggregator and blogger community specific to Tufts University students, professors, alumni, and staff.
We built a system that allowed hundreds of bloggers to share their posts, either created on the site or syndicated from personal blogs. We added a social layer, deeply integrating BuddyPress into many of the site’s features. We added a layer of moderator controls to allow posts to be featured on the homepage and section pages or hidden from these pages altogether (not showing up in the “Recent Posts” lists but still on the author’s blog). When a post is featured, a moderator can control the featured image and headline without altering the actual post’s images or headline.
We also heavily customized the WordPress backend by rebranding it, defining which pages are visible to each user type, using custom post types to make content entry more logical, and customizing the help text at the top of important pages. Finally, we migrated all their existing content (over 3,000 posts) from Joomla to WordPress.
